Contemporary Architecture
Rooted in
the Classical Tradition
SCROLL
Mitchell Studio is an architecture firm focused on the design of buildings expressed in traditional language and rooted in the vernacular of place. Founded by Sam Mitchell and located in New Haven, Connecticut, Mitchell Studio has completed custom homes and renovations from Maine to Florida.
The variety of design solutions apparent in the work of Mitchell Studio reflects the many diverse environments around the country where the work is located. The range of regional influences, from climate and landscape to building traditions and materials, leads to a varied palette of form and detail. However, for Mitchell Studio, the familiarity with the language of traditional architecture is not an end in and of itself but a point of departure. While there is a consistent classical backbone to the work, each project displays an inventive and original interpretation of the language.
The result is a portfolio of completed projects with singular personalities. The plan of a house on a Westchester golf course could never be mistaken for that of a house on the Florida coast; the living room cornice of a New York City apartment could not be repeated in a Hamptons beach house. There is no signature style in the work of Mitchell Studio, but if there is one characteristic that identifies a Mitchell Studio project, it is a consistent focus on proportion, livability and timelessness.
Mitchell Studio and Sam Mitchell have been recognized widely with features in numerous publications, including Architectural Digest, Veranda, Elle Décor, Traditional Home and Town and Country and awards from The Institute for Classical Architecture and Art and the American Institute of Architects, among others.

Sam Mitchell
Sam Mitchell has a deep appreciation for the rich traditions of American architecture and homes that fit comfortably into their surroundings, physically and culturally, drawing inspiration as frequently from famed architects as from local craftspeople.
Sam grew up in Connecticut in a family where art, music, and creativity were highly valued. His parents, a writer/editor and a journalist turned non-profit organizer and champion, inspired Sam and his three siblings to follow creative paths. Two of his siblings are writer/editors, while another is an architect with a distinguished career in academia.
While exploring detours into various fine arts media from sculpture to printmaking and other disciplines of design, including graphics, jewelry, and fashion — leading to internships with Bill Blass and Alexander Julian — Sam always gravitated towards architecture . After earning his B.A. in English and Art History as a Morehead Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he attended the Graduate School of Design at Harvard, where he received his Master of Architecture degree and served as a teaching fellow at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Since establishing Mitchell Studio in 1996, Sam has designed custom homes and renovations from Maine to Florida and most states between with a particular focus on the New York tri-state area. Sam maintains architecture licenses in Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Florida.
On weekends, Sam is as likely to be found at his desk with a pencil in hand as he is to be outside with gardening tools , cultivating heirloom apples and a chemical-free landscape at the 18th-century Vermont sheep farm that is a weekend escape. Sam and his wife, who are the parents of four children and two big Labrador retrievers, enjoy collecting art and supporting local artists and arts organizations.

Bill Pollack
Studio Director Bill Pollack has had a passion for architecture since he majored in art as an undergrad. After a decade as a dentist, he returned to his first love and earned his Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He joined Mitchell Studio in 2007.
Bill’s design inspirations are extensive, ranging from classical French architecture to David Adler, Mies van Der Rohe, and Richard Meier. In fact, it was Meier’s dramatically sited Douglas House, which Bill saw while sailing on Lake Michigan, that was pivotal to his change of career.
In addition to his work at Mitchell Studio, Bill is an adjunct instructor of art history at Connecticut College. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, growing dahlias, antique wooden sailboats, and a good hotel bar.

Andrea Glynne
Now in her 26th year at Mitchell Studio, Andrea Glynne enjoys her multifaceted role at the firm, which includes managing the project sample library, coordinating products and schedules, keeping records and project files up to date, and maintaining relationships with vendors. Organized and detail-oriented, she appreciates the studio’s small team environment as well as the individuality and uniqueness of each project the firm takes on.
In her free time, Andrea gardens and hikes, and she looks forward to teaching her grandchildren how to ski. It’s a skill she mastered while growing up in Germany’s Bavarian Alps, where her parents owned an inn in a popular resort town, and she worked for the family business.

Matthew Meehan
Rhode Island native Matthew Meehan studied illustration at the Savannah College of Art & Design before transferring to the NewSchool of Architecture in San Diego, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Architecture. Prior to arriving at Mitchell Studio more than a decade ago, he worked at Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City, Burgin Lambert in Newport, Rhode Island, and Pappageorge Haymes in Chicago. At Mitchell Studio, Matthew specializes in schematic design imaging and does 3D modeling in addition to renderings and other graphics-related tasks.
When he’s not at work, Matthew dabbles in art and illustration projects, makes music, and tends to his flock of Faverolles chickens.

Rachel Kelly
Growing up in Killingworth, Connecticut, gave Rachel Kelly an abiding love for historic buildings, an interest she developed at Rhode Island’s Roger Williams University, where she earned both a B.S. and a Master of Architecture. Since joining Mitchell Studio in 2022, she’s embraced the opportunity to help shape and impact the lives of clients through architecture, and she especially enjoys the “little” details involved in designing private and functional spaces like butler’s pantries and kitchens.
Outside the office, you’ll find her working with her hands, whether painting, woodworking, or gardening. She also creates aquascapes for a variety of freshwater fish, from neon Stiphodon gobies to Kuhli loaches to pea puffers.

Kevin Enright
A native of Guilford, Connecticut, which is home to historic buildings from the 17th century on, Kevin Enright grew up helping his carpenter/cabinetmaker father on a variety of projects. When Kevin chose Frank Lloyd Wright as the subject for a class project in middle school, architecture took on new significance. He later earned his B.S. in architecture at New Hampshire’s Keene State College.
Now in his sixth year at Mitchell Studio, Kevin works on city apartments, renovations, and ground-up designs. When not in the office, he undertakes his own design/build projects, such as the covered porch he designed for the home he shares with his wife and three children.

SIENNA CUMMINGS
Sienna Cummings brings a range of interests to Mitchell Studio, but she’s especially drawn to the personal aspect of residential architecture and the opportunity to improve people’s lives through thoughtful design. Named for the deep red-brown hue by her artist-interior designer mother, the Connecticut native took her first architecture class while in high school. Her fascination with historic houses led her to attend the University of Virginia, where she earned her B.S. in Architecture. During college, Sienna also did a stint in Venice and interned at an interior design studio. Outside the office, you’ll find her pursuing her talents as a DJ and playing in women’s basketball and softball leagues.
